NASCAR Outlaws Coffee

The Stephen Cox Blog is presented by “Corvette Miracle: The 1970 24 Hours of Daytona” Auto racing is the most over-regulated sport in the world. Germain Racing crew chief Matt Borland was suspended by NASCAR following a random drug test, reportedly for the mortal sin of drinking a particular type of coffee for the last six months. This dietary version of Satan’s brew comes with Dimethylamylamine (DMAA), which helps users burn body fat. Dunno about you, but burning excess body fat seems like a good idea to me. DMAA also provides an energy boost by imitating adrenaline and potentially creating Read More

THIS Will Bring Fans Back to the Races!

Stephen Cox Blog Presented by McGunegill Engine Performance The past few years have brought every gimmick imaginable to auto racing. NASCAR holds races that three people can win. The ever-changing playoff system (a gimmick in itself) functions like an automotive version of musical chairs. Indycar’s gimmicks are even worse. They tried mandating overpriced “body kits” to make their field of 33 identical Dallara chassis look like something other than a field of 33 identical Dallara chassis. Their “Fast Nine” and “Fast Six” qualifying gimmick hasn’t revived interest in pole day although it’s proven very effective at totally confusing fans. Instead Read More

I don't know Buddy Baker. I met him only once.

We were introduced about ten years ago at Lingner Group Television Productions in downtown Indianapolis where I was filming an episode of Autoweek on Speedvision. Baker, a huge man who towered six inches over me, was there working on a NASCAR program. He graciously shook my hand and took the time to speak to me. He wasn't in a hurry.

A truly great fan experience at an auto race is typified by several things. The cars should lose grip and slide in the corners, and fans should be able to see it. They should be able to see the driver's hands struggle on the steering wheel to maintain control. They should be able to see all, or at least most, of the race track. This combination has drawn crowds to race tracks for over a century.

NASCAR and Congressional Blackmail

Auto racing has once more been turned into a political circus by a politician who apparently has so little actual work to do that he must fill his time by advocating media censorship.
