The cover story of the January/February issue of Late Model Racer magazine features an in-depth look at the future of the USARacing ProCup series.
The series is expected to continue its recent revival as evidenced by the newly-released 14-race schedule for the upcoming season. Among the major steps taken this year is a national television package produced by Sopwith Motorsports.
Speaking in Late Model Racer’s article, ProCup series vice president Jimmy Wilson said “As far as television, we announced our production deal with Sopwith Motorsports and Stephen Cox. That’s going to be a great relationship. Stephen’s roots go deep in the series, back when we were on SPEED as a pit reporter, so he knows a lot of people in the series. He’s got a passion for it and will be a true partner for us.”
Additional new developments for the new year are a 14-date concert tour by musician Matt Dylon held in conjunction with USAR races, and a new partnership with Navistar.
“I’m just excited to be involved in short track racing with USAR again,” said Sopwith CEO Stephen Cox. “Everyone at Sopwith is pretty anxious to dive in. We’re committing a lot to this effort and it’s something we really believe in. Everyone at Sopwith knows my history with the series, and our race team even ran a couple of events when we were doing circle tracks. So there’s a lot of history there. It’s a long term deal and we’re in it for the long haul.”
But Cox says there’s more to USAR’s recovery than meets the eye. “The ProCup series is an icon of short track racing. This is not just about saving a series and making it viable again. There are a lot of Cup guys out there who got their start in USAR. A lot of car owners have bought a lot of equipment specially for this series. A lot of people have a lot riding on this and should really be thanking the ownership group that saved it.”
