Track Record Attempt This Week at Nelson Ledges

Categories: Racing News.

Sopwith Motorsports will establish a foundational lap time for a street legal Fox Mustang at Nelson Ledges Race Course on July 23rd when the team’s 1980 pony car takes to the 1.7-mile track. Nicknamed “Blue Thunder,” Sopwith’s Mustang has been upgraded with a McGunegill LM425 racing engine, Cold Case aluminium radiator from National Parts Depot and Stiffler Engineering’s chassis bracing system.

The staff at Nelson Ledges has confirmed that no records yet exist for a fully registered and licensed early Fox Mustang (1979-86), so the team’s best lap will establish the first track record in the category. The increasing popularity of Fox body Mustangs in the collector car world makes a record desirable and helpful to other Fox owners who want to improve their street cars and measure them against a common standard at a beautiful, historic racing venue.

“Our goal is just to create a baseline for other Fox owners,” said driver Stephen Cox. “We’re not claiming to set an incredible record that will stand for all time. But you can’t hit a target that doesn’t exist, so our intent is just to give Fox owners something to shoot at. Someone will probably beat our lap time very soon, and I hope they do. This is just a starting point. Bring your Fox out to Nelson Ledges, lay down a lap time and have some fun.”

The results will be posted on the official Nelson Ledges website. Fox owners can bring their cars to any Nelson Ledges Track Day with Kryder Racing to record their own lap times.
