Mecum Auto Auctions has commissioned Sopwith Motorsports to compose the text of a new book on the legendary L&M Porsche 917/10, winner of the 1972 Can-Am series.
“Mecum Auctions has done automotive history a great service,” said Sopwith’s Stephen Cox. “They’re bringing one of the most recognizable racecars in history to public auction, they’ve brought together the people who made this car great, and they’ve commissioned a book to record the legacy of this car while many of those who participated in the 1972 season are still able to tell their stories.”
The L&M Porsche will be available for public viewing at the upcoming Mecum Monterey auction August 16-18. Company president Dana Mecum has stipulated that admission be complimentary so that the public can see the famed L&M Porsche up close.
The new book will outline the history of the car’s 1972 championship season in the hands of George Follmer and Mark Donohue. Interviews with the car’s chief mechanic, driver and current owner will make this work a reliable permanent record of this chapter in the golden era of American road racing.
The book, tentatively titled “Penske L&M Porsche 917/10: Can-Am Champion,” will be released prior to the Mecum Monterey auction.
