When the Super Cup Stock Car Series 2018 campaign wrapped up at Virginia’s Dominion Speedway Saturday night, it was still a three-way battle for the Southern Division points championship.

Driving the STA-BIL Brand Fuel Stabilizer #21, Stephen Cox was third in the title chase and needed to win the race and have points leaders Bob Schact and Ben Ebeling finish outside the top ten in order to secure the title.

“My spotter and crew chief both suggested driving deep into the corners, which we had really tried to avoid last time we were here,” Cox said. “But the car seemed to respond pretty well this time and in the second half of the race it felt pretty good.”

It appeared that Cox might have a shot at the title when points leader Bob Schact blew a front right tire and crashed hard in Turn Two midway through the race. Cox capitalized on the opportunity and made a late-race charge from 8th position to 4th, but Ben Ebeling was strong enough to hold on for the win and the Southern Division title.

Cox won the Hard Charger award for the night, his second of the season. He finished third in the Super Cup South season points chase, and 4th in the 60-lap event at Dominion.

With the oval season complete, Stephen Cox now turns his attention to road racing. He will compete in the World Racing League’s “October Rush” endurance race at Tulsa’s Hallett Motor Racing Circuit on October 19-20. Cox’s team won both WRL events at Hallett during his last visit in 2015. He has a dozen victories and two championship titles at the track.

Cox is then scheduled to compete in the European EGT sports car championship when the series kicks off in Spain later this fall.
