The #82 JR Fastener Corporation Chevrolet scored a 4th place finish for Brandon Huff Racing in last weekend’s main event at Barberton Speedway in Norton, Ohio, in a thrilling race that required perseverence from the driver and crew.
Driver Stephen Cox led briefly in the early laps of the race before a penalty moved him to the tail of the field. Mechanical issues slowed the team’s efforts to work their way back through the field when the brakes failed, followed by clutch failure. Cox was forced to shift without the clutch between 3rd and 4th gear for the remainder of the event while pumping the brakes for every corner.
“I don’t think I would have wanted another driver in the truck tonight,” team owner Dan Huff said after the race. “Experience is really important. That’s not a situation that you want to ask a rookie to handle.”
The JR Fastener/Huff Racing crew worked tirelessly throughout the day and allowed Cox to set the 3rd fastest lap of the entire event – miraculous considering the team’s difficulties.
“I really enjoy the CRS Super Truck Series,” Cox said after his first race in the series, his first race in the #82 truck and his first experience with Huff Racing. “Billy Strehle (series owner) does a great job. He’s a reasonable guy who works hard to keep his drivers happy and run a fair race. And big thanks to JR Fastener, Brian Broderick, Huff Racing and everyone who helped make this weekend happen.”
Cox takes the next two weekends off from racing to co-host NBCSN’s coverage of Mecum Auctions at Monterey. He then returns to wheel the JR Fastener Corporation #82 at Lake Erie Speedway on August 28.
