The August 18-20 event was again held at the Hyatt Monterey with a special preview area on the rolling greens of the Del Monte Golf Course. The area was free to the public and thousands turned out to see, buy or sell classic cars. The weekend was even more spectacular because of the amazing selection of wooden-hulled boats from the early 20th century, as well as the world's first televised, motorcycle-only auction.
Sopwith's Stephen Cox hosted the event along with Scott Hoke, Bill Stephens, John Kraman and motorcycle specialist Alain Decadenet. All three days of the auction were carried live on Discovery's HD Theater/Velocity Channel. Along with his muscle car and racing background, Cox is the telecast's resident boat expert and most of the boats in the auction were featured on air.
Among the top sellers for the weekend was a 1961 Mercedes-Benz SL 300 roadster that sold for $585,000, a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT that went for $335,000, and the 1931 Indy 500-winning car, the original Miller Bowes Seal Fast Special, which sold for a cool 2 million.
Mecum next visits the Pheasant Run Resort at St. Charles, IL on September 15-18 to auction more than 1,000 classic vehicles. The program will again be carried live on HD Theater/Velocity.
